How It Works:
 
The Technical Information
Fraxel Re:fine  laser, as the name suggests, uses a fractional technique to treat the skin. Using thousands of tiny microscopic laser columns of light, it penetrates deep into the skin tissue whilst leaving the skins external structure intact allowing for minimal down time. The remaining skin tissue acts as a natural bandage supporting the treated skin tissue during its healing phase whilst enabling the stimulation of new collagen from the inside out. The treated areas of old cells are eliminated slowly over a few weeks as they are replaced by healthy new tissue. 
 
Treatment Time:
Depending on the area being treated the procedure takes between 15-30 minutes to perform.
Plus an hour for the topical anaesthetic to take effect.

What To Expect During The Treatment:
A topical Anaesthetic is applied prior to the area to be treated.
The technician maps out the area to be treated and rolls the treatment head several times back and forth over the entire area in a pattern delivering the precise  amount of energy and coverage for your specific concern.
Cold air is directed onto the treated are throughout the entire procedure to minimise discomfort.
After the treatment a gentle post laser moisturiser and sunscreen is applied. Mineral Make up is also applied to cover the temporary redness.
 
What To Expect After Treatment:
Immediately after your Fraxel Re:fine treatment your skin will become red, much like a sunburn, this can also be accompanied by some mild swelling in the case of deeper treatments. You may experience a sensation of heat for a few hours after treatment; applying cold compresses to your skin will help relieve this. (Ice Packs are not advised as they can lead to ice burns)
The redness can last 1-3 days. Swelling usually subsides within a day or two.
By day 3-5 the skin will start to take on a bronzed appearance and feels tight. Using a moisturiser will assist in relieving the dry tight feeling.
Within the first week your skin will start to shed the old cells which will flake and become rough as they work their way out from the skin.
We invite you back into the clinic to have a post treatment assessment of your skin in 2 weeks. We also suggest that you book a post treatment facial to assist skin exfoliation and hydration.

What Is A Non- Ablative Laser?
Non-ablative lasers are basically a laser that has deep penetration into the skin surface whilst maintaining the upper level of the skin intact. By maintaining the upper level of skin it is able to assure protection of the treated skin, forming a barrier against infection. They require little or no downtime for the client.
Ablative lasers remove the entire surface layer of the skin leaving the client looking like a burns victim and of course requiring stringent medical supervision and infection control. Recovery can take weeks to months. Skin is often sensitised and photosensitive thus ongoing care is vital.
 
Whilst Ablative lasers do have their place, they are limiting to those clients who simply do not have the time to take weeks from work and social engagements. The non-ablative laser therefore is an excellent choice for those who have mild to moderate rejuvenation concerns and whose lifestyles cannot be put on hold.
 
Is it safe?
Fraxel has been cleared by TGA and FDA to treat fine lines around the eyes, age spots/sunspots, pigment irregularities and uneven skin tone. It is also able to give a general all over freshness to the skins appearance and assist in smoothing and refining open pores and mild acne scarring. Does It  Hurt?
Like any form of skin rejuvenation there is some level of discomfort.
We use a topical anaesthetic prior to the treatment to minimise discomfort and cold air is blown onto the skin continually throughout the treatment to further increase the skins comfort.
 
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
Fraxel Re:fine can produce significant results for mild to moderately damaged skin over the course of 3 to 6 treatments. Treatments are spaced at least 4 weeks apart and results are accumulative. Your therapist can advise on your needs.

Do I Need To Take Time Off Work?
Most clients return to work within a day. Some individuals may experience more swelling than others, and if treating around the eyes this may also occur. You may require a day off if from work you find your eyes have puffed up. Generally if you are a person who suffers from fluid retention regularly you may experience this.
 
What Are The Risks And Side Effects?
Apart from the obvious ones like initial swelling and redness the skin will feel slightly sensitive for a day. There are always risks with any type of laser treatment.  Pigmentation and dark spots often become darker initially after treatment. This diminishes as the old skin cells shed and they are replaced by healthy new cells.
Sometimes pigmentation can arise after treating deeper into the skin and occasionally it can stay. It is vital that good sun protection is observed and you tell us honestly about your lifestyle and previous sun exposure as well as hereditary and hormonal conditions that could trigger this kind of response. Certain medication can increase the likelihood of increased pigmentation, please inform your therapist of anything that may be the trigger. Contraceptives are often a cause of melasma and hyperpigmentation which unless ceased will continue to be a problem and results may not be achieved or maintained.
 
What should I do after my treatment?
We suggest calming skin care preparations after treatment and whilst skin is healing. Avoid heat, saunas, hot baths and showers or exercising on the day of your treatment.
A follow up visit to the clinic in 2 weeks is advised and stringent sun protection is vital.
